'Boss told me I'm stealing': Worker accused of wage theft for clocking in for meetings on their days off

It stands to reason that when you're working for your boss off the clock, you're just giving away the value of your work and experience. This is fine to do sometimes if you're fairly compensated overall and have a strong working relationship with your employer. Still, there are a lot of employers who try and take advantage of their workers by having them work unpaid overtime, saving on the cost of labor while still getting the work done.

There's a common way this happens in retail, with workers being told to clock out at closing time, even though there are always closing tasks to be completed after the doors are locked. Combine this with policies that make claiming overtime as painful and time-consuming as possible, and you have yourself a bunch of work for free. Ten to fifteen minutes of unpaid work every shift results in over a week of unpaid work a year.

When this worker decided to clock in for the hour-long mandatory meetings they were being asked to attend on their day off, their boss turned around and accused them of wage theft, prompting the worker, Redditor u/DannoWhamo, to share their experience to the popular r/antiwork subreddit. Commenters derided the boss's attitude and shared some advice to the worker.
