Getting passed up for a promotion when you know you're the best candidate is heart-breaking—made worse by the fact that it's usually because of some petty political dynamic or so that they can bring in a nepotism hire. Bonus points when the person who successfully interviewed for the role turns around and asks you for help or tries to delegate your work because your peers and managers have recognized you as the "go-to person." Whatever you decide to do at that point… you probably would like to quit.
That's what this worker shared experiencing when they were unsuccessful in interviewing for an internal transfer. It wasn't long after the successful candidate was promoted that they reached out to the worker, asking for their help and advising that they had been pointed in their direction.
Commenters responded with a heap of solid advice, largely advising the worker to be kind to the guy who got the role but to guard themselves within the organization going forward and to look for another job, as it is likely that the organization is intentionally keeping them in a job where they feel they are most effective.
