Long ago, in the ancient city-state of Cuddleopilis, lived an ameowzingly advanced and culturally rich civilization, with cuddling prowess beyond any that we currently know. They were known as the Cuddlestodians, and were keepers of the secrets of all snuggly feline arts, whose job was to safeguard their noble arts from the bloodthirsty empires of their time.
Centuries have passed, and Cuddleopilis fell into the depths of memory, almost forgotten until one day, a pawdorable kitten fell down a well one day, only to be caught by the metallic hands of an ancient and derelict automaton. Having stumbled across an ancient entrance to Cuddleopolis, the Fur Baby Museum awarded the kitten with an honorary 'explorer' title and all the excavated artifacts they find will be partly credited to it.

Why sit on the hooman? Firstly, it's comfy and radiates heat, giving these kitties optimal snuggling conditions. Secondly, to show the hooman that it can only move if they so desire it, making sure it knows the kitties are in charge.
Depicted here is an ancient mural from the lost (now found) city of Cuddleopolis, depicting two practitioners of the snuggly feline arts. Though they are sleeping, it is to be believed that they are capable of reacting to anything at a moment's notice.
