Leaving a job can be a difficult decision, especially when you have built strong relationships with your coworkers and boss. Even when the relationship is bad or nonexistent, deciding to leave isn't easy, as you're trading the known security of your current position for something unknown. Still, you need to weigh your current situation against the risks and decide whether or not your current role is going to get you to where you want to be. Ultimately, while leaving a job can be a challenging process, it can also lead to new opportunities and growth.
Still, there's no telling how your boss might react when you hand in your notice. Even if you're on good terms with them, they may take it personally when you tell them you're leaving—in fact, the closer you are, the more betrayed they may feel. This can lead to an explosive or otherwise negative reaction that ends with the dissolution of the relationship.
While this worker might not have been on the best of terms with their boss, they were still surprised by their boss's reaction when they gave their notice, letting her know that they were putting in their two-week notice after two years at the company. They noticed that her face was twitching during the interaction, after which she reportedly went away and said spiteful things behind their back to the rest of the team.
The worker shared an account of events on a popular online workplace discussion community, telling of their experience and seeking readers' advice as to whether or not they made the right decision when they decided to leave.
Read on to see screenshots of the original thread as it was shared with Reddit and to see some of the reader's responses from the ensuing thread. Next, read about this worker who received a lowball counter offer after telling their employer they intended to take another job.
