Have you ever had this crushing anxiety that you shouldn't be doing the job that you're doing? That, although you're a consummate professional, really you're just a child inside of a giant robot controlling it with an off-brand controller. You fear people discovering this secret and revealing that you actually have no idea what the heck you're doing and don't deserve any of the success that has been handed to you.
This is imposter syndrome, and many people suffer from it—and in part, it's true, we're all just giant robots that have been reprogrammed around our previous versions. Now the code is so archaic, layered, and messy that there's no way to truly untangle it.
Still, I'm sure you're great at your job and doing just fine, and nothing like the interview panel in this story.
This insurance guy was approached by a recruiter for an insurance sales position at a company. Despite his repeated protests that he was overqualified for the role they were hiring for, they refused to take no for an answer and aggressively entered him into the interview process.
As the interview progressed, it became increasingly clear that the hiring managers had no idea what they were even on about. They repeatedly handed him wrong information and asked him to do things that he knew were completely out of line for the profession. This would lead him to explain, at length, to the interviewers how their jobs should work in a professional insurance company. T
When the cards were laid out, the interviewing team deemed him unworthy of the position. But it was they who were soon to be discovered to be unworthy of their own roles, getting a swift kick out the door once their incompetence had been exposed.
