A glance at the week that was.
Hello, it's that time again. We have no choice but to take a look at a few of the viral phenomena and discussions that have captivated the internet over the past few days. Without further ado, here's what we're working with.
Aliens Are Real
There's nothing that posters and meme makers love more than a funny little guy. It made the online reaction to Congress holding a UFO-confirming hearing all the more inevitable. The general consensus seems to be that we have enough going on without worrying about beings from other planets. Also, there isn't that much reason why they'd want to visit us.
While there is every reason that extraterrestrials may exist, I'm inclined to take a guy who claims that were discovered by the likes of the Vatican and Mussolini with a pinch of salt.
Twitter's X-Rated Era
Another day, another harebrained scheme happening on Elon Musk's Twitter — except that it is Twitter no longer. The former bird app underwent a radical rebrand earlier this week, changing its name and logo to X.
Reportedly, Musk has been obsessed with this letter since his PayPal days, when he tried and failed to change the name of the payment site to the very same thing. Focus groups thought it sounded pornographic, and those on the app that was once known as Twitter have had a similar reaction.
The company seems hellbent on proceeding with the rebrand, but whether its users are going to start referring to it as such remains to be seen. It's certainly one of the more creative leaps in its inevitable demise.
I Like Turtles
Paramount has been taking lessons at the school of Barbie's meme-friendly marketing. As they gear up for the release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem in a few days' time, the movie has been given the seal of approval from a vintage viral legend. The now-adult ‘I like turtles’ kid has put his zombie makeup back on to support the new release. It's a nicer way of getting that belated meme bag that turning yourself into an NFT, that's for sure.
So ends another eventful week online. Who knows what the next one will bring? We'll be sure to let you know.
