Font - Thinking of going AWOL My work sneakily tried to relocate me, got me out of the province working a job supposedly for only "a few weeks". Get to said job, I'm given keys to an apartment instead of a hotel and I'm told that I'll be taking over the testing lab full time here, I think it's very unprofessional of them to do this to me as I have responsibilities back where I live, and the few days to a week off I used to get meant a lot because I could take care of personal things.

Font - Anyways, I'm currently sitting in this apartment. Supervisor won't answer my texts or calls and I'm stressed out, I know how it usually works out if you refuse to relocate, you end up losing your job anyways. So, do I go AWOL and drive 8 hours back to where I live and just ghost the company?

Font - Ok-Panic-3940 - 22 hr. ago Ya, I'd say these clowns. What did they think would happen if they fraudulently relocated someone? If they're willing to do such a thing to you, who knows what bullshit is next. 191 Reply Share

Font - FlamingoMedium 7410 OP 22 hr. ago It's so stupid, I have screenshots of my supervisor telling me to just pack for a few weeks, trying to butter me up with a decent looking apartment as if that's going to make me want to stay and drop everything where I currently live

Font - alanius4 22 hr. ago Grab someone elses phone and call your boss, telling them you are going ack as there was a mistake, and then turn off your phone till you get there

Font - BadMamaJama1978. 21 hr. ago Keep in mind that they may have gotten the apartment because it's cheaper. And they may use it for the next person after your couple of weeks are up.

Font - My previous company leased a couple of fully furnished apartments for some employees that came from out of state to help us on a project. It was cheaper for the company on the long run.

Font - Now you may be completely right and they are trying to get you to stay. But just keep the other possibility in mind.

Font - bigmacmcjackson. 18 hr. ago stay at the location for the few week duration, on the forth week walk into your old building and starting working like you used to? see your bosses reaction, then quit.

Font - PresentationNew5976. 18 hr. ago They can't just decide that you live somewhere else without asking you. If they pull something like this now, there is no telling the kind of crap you have waiting for you down the line. Do what you think is best and follow your intuition.

Font - SpretumPathos. 7 hr. ago. edited 7 hr. ago A stressful time for sure. But there's no immediate time pressure on you. Relax. Take a step back. You'd planned on being here a few weeks anyway.

Font - Get all the information. If you're not getting the information you need from your first point of contact, question more broadly. You should definitely have a lot of questions about this situation. Ask them. Process what you find out.

Font - Figure out your options. Do what you can to increase those options. That might mean job hunting (you should always be job hunting if you're not 110% satisfied with where you are now), or angling for a better contract.

Font - Determine your risks/liabilities. Can you afford to be without a job right now? How employable are you? Do what you can to address them. Determine your leverage. How much do they need you? Taking over a lab sounds like a pretty big responsibility. They might need you a fair bit. But don't overplay your hand.

Font - Also: This is clearly a _major_ up on behalf of your company. But companies can't make tups. Only people can make kups. And a tup like this doesn't happen unless someone else is panicking. Probably someone in the management chain between you and head office is just as anxious as you are right now. (Probably your boss who isn't answering calls). If you are going to leave, try to them on the way out, after you've got another job sorted out. Make a plan. Document everything.
