Font - Just had a Zoom job interview, and the recruiter asked me to "show her around the room" I'm interviewing for one of those roles in "a fast-paced environment" and the interview was going well until the recruiter asked me to show her around the room that I was in. The room wasn't in a state that I was comfortable showing, and I was shocked that this was even being requested.

Font - I asked her why, and she said that the role that requires a lot of organization and time management, and "you can tell a lot about a person from the way their room looks." I suck under pressure so I fumbled a bit, and the interviewer then was like "it's fine if you're not comfortable with that" and we moved on. But I just can't stop thinking about it. It felt so... power-trippy? Was anyone else ever asked to show the room during a Zoom call?

Font - bluwisdom. 1 I kinda wish the reply was "I'll show you mine if you show me yours. I want to make sure that you fully represent your company's values." Then proceed to ask to see every single part of their house before deciding the job want for them. 7.7k Share

Font - balaam_beast. Was offered a work from home job recently that part of the things I had to agree to in order to do the job would be random 'Desk Checks' where they would require me to turn my webcam and show my desk off to them to ensure there was nothing 'distracting' on it. Like paper and pens or food. I noped out of that one. 2.9k Share

Beyond surprising - this makes me question the professionalism and expected personal boundaries of the workplace culture." I'd follow up with email to document it and cc their higher ups. 807 Share

Font - Christopherfromtheuk Massive red flag. The only response is "no, that's unprofessional and says infinitely more about your company than my room about me. This is clearly not a good fit. I hope you find someone better suited. Goodbye" 143 Share

Font - ievsyaosnevvgsuabsbs. All of the other posters are correct that this is not professional, but also unless they have data to support this it's likely to be nonsense. At work I'm considered to be extremely tidy and organised, but at home I'm a mess. 528 Share

Font - forhordlingrads That is sleazy as hate how so many I employers are weaponizing video calls and WFH practices to play power games. I have been successfully self-employed for almost a decade and frequently receive feedback from colleagues and clients about how organized and responsible I am, but my house -- including my office -- is a disaster.

Font - Not to mention how this is probably a question they ask now to screen out people with ADHD or other issues with executive function without asking illegal questions. T317 Share

If it's test of anything, it's a test of whether you would let an employer violate personal/professional boundaries. 112 Share

Font - LifeGivesMeMelons. I had to do that during a monitored online evaluation, to demonstrate that I didn't have any materials nearby I could use to cheat with. Which, honestly, was weird enough. That's crazy. 69 Share
