There are a lot of different ways to support people with cancer. Usually, the most important ways are acts of service; signing up to cook meals for their family is a great step. Even just being an ear to listen and not to lecture can help enormously. While some people enjoy symbolic means of support, like wearing pink for breast cancer awareness month, it doesn't actually do much to support the people who are struggling with it. Shaving your head for someone is a similar act of service. While it makes some people (especially kids) feel like they're not in it alone, nobody should feel like they have to do that to support someone with cancer. A lot of the time, it's a vanity move for the person without cancer to show how supportive and what a good friend they are. This story turned that narrative on its head, and it's so sad to read.
