'Now for the revenge': IT Head gets back at boss and backstabbing coworker who conspired against him

When it comes to backstabbing and the pursuit of revenge—no one is walking away with their hands clean. Such endeavors require one to get intimate with underhanded affairs—hands and knees in the dirt, tossing and tumbling together like a litter of five-week-old puppies. Of course, this is all metaphorical—in a sense… You won't actually find the battles of office politics being fought with grown adults tousling on the ground, vying for the upper hand as ties are tugged, and high-heels are repurposed as weapons of concerning effectiveness. Still, the reality is just as immature, with the true battles taking place just as they would in a middle school lunchroom: with whispers, secrets, and the truly incompetent grossly overestimating their abilities. 

This IT Head shared their story of fending off an incompetent subordinate who, for years, made backhanded attempts, insisting to anyone who would listen that they deserved the IT Head's position and pay, requiring each new director who joined the organization to make a judgment call about whether or not there was some substance and truth to their claims. 

Of course, by sheer statistical chance, eventually, the subordinate found a willing ear in a new Financial Director who had joined the organization and didn't like that the IT Head wasn't willing to bow down to them. The two conspired to rid themselves of the IT Head and install the (still) incompetent subordinate in their place. And so they did, ousting the IT Head by gaining access to their emails and digging up dirt. This would kickstart the IT Head's revenge arc that would see them both out of jobs. But, like all good revenge stories, all the (now ex) IT Head had to do was wait for their own incompetence to do them in.

It wasn't too long before the pair realized that they were in well over their heads, leading them to fraudulently complete a government audit that neither of them knew how to complete. When this unfolded, the pair were both out of a job, with the subordinate being fired on the spot. But, that's not where things would end—the IT Head wasn't done with them just yet…

    Font - Then the real issues started. Most organisations at that time didn't have IT represented at board level. In my capacity as 'Head of IT' I reported into the Finance Director (FD) who sat on the board. It was understood by the FD that I only reported into them for line management purposes (approval for PTO etc) and that, when it came to running the IT in the organisation, they needed to follow my lead and not interfere.

    Font - Unbeknownst to me, Bill had managed to get hold of a password to an email admin account (which he was not supposed to have) and had gone into my corporate emails. When I joined this organisation I continued to do some pro- bono (i.e. unpaid / free) advisory work for some charities and non-profits who needed IT advice.     Font - What most people don't realise about IT is that we are the keepers of all the organisations information. We have access to everything and we monitor absolutely everything that goes on when you use corporate IT equipment. One of the main reasons IT does this is for audit and compliance reasons and this particular company worked on state contracts meaning they had to comply with state IT audit rules and attend an annual state IT audit committee.

    Font - Knowing how to successfully pass a state IT security and information audit is something you don't just learn from a book or a course, it comes from experience and mentoring from others who have learnt before you and who pass on this knowledge.     Font - Bill was given the job of pulling together the data needed for the annual audit and he was massively out of his depth. He tried to solicit help from the rest of the team but they knew to stay the h away from the situation and basically told him they didn't know what to do. So what was Bill to do? Simple. He went through my old emails, found the audit response I had submitted the year before, and simply changed the dates and names and passed it on to the FD who submitted it to the state.

    Font - Shortly thereafter Bill and the FD had a massive falling out. Not sure what it was about but apparently it was a stand-up screaming match in the office and Bill was fired on the spot for gross insubordination and misconduct.
