It's often the case that an employer won't react well to an employee's departure, taking their act of leaving as an insult and personal affront. Even if the relationship was supposedly left on good terms, it won't be long before the departing worker's name brings nothing but derision. Should they return to the workplace, they'll find, that despite being a top performer at the company during their time there, they have been turned into a scapegoat with their name being used to lay blame on anything and everything that has gone wrong… Even when it comes to decisions that they were explicitly speaking out against. And, to an extent, it's only fair for their coworkers who remain to do this. Especially in workplaces where bullying managers and owners thrive on toxicity, someone needs to take the blame… So why not blame the guy who's no longer there?
It's not unusual for employers to want to keep a worker's impending departure quiet for as long as possible to maintain continuity and hopefully find a replacement before announcing the departure, for fear of the fact that the announcement could suddenly cause the other workers to realize that there is something better out there. This employer took it a step further, deciding to tell the rest of their remaining employees that their coworker had been fired after they quit on the spot.
See this worker's account of the events, telling how their workplace attempted to cover up the fact that their coworker had quit by instead lying about the reasons for their departure.
