"You should go by a different name."

Ah we've hit the busy part of the summer season folks. Rates have jumped up and so has the amount of entitled guests. We've gotten millions of ridiculous complaints during the overnights recently but we just had a super fun phone call this morning.

As the night auditor I am also the "overnight lead" which means I'm in charge until a supervisor or assistant manager comes in. Tonight I had to send my overnight desk agent home because he got sick. So it was just me and a new guy at the desk.

I'm trying to figure up my paperwork at the desk when the new guy comes up to me. NG: there's a lady on the phone that wants to talk to a manager. Me: why is she calling? NG: she wants to make a report about something that happened. Me: Did she give you any details? NG: something about a step on the shuttle
  • 06
Me: Okay, tell her that there wont be a manager in until 7 but she can speak to the lead agent if she wants to.
  • 07
NG goes back to tell the guest this. (Note: I am a female with a unisex name. NG is a male with the same name. It gets confusing in the mornings.) While new guy is on the phone I go stand at the computer next to him at the desk to help any guests. I can hear the lady on the phone is yelling and new guy looks a bit panicked, poor thing isn't used to hospitality yet. NG puts the guest on hold

and tells me that she's leaving on a tour soon so she "guesses" she'll make her report to me since no one else is available. So I get on the phone and introduce myself with my name and title.

Me: Hi thanks for holding this is [name] the overnight lead (works better than night auditor most of the time) Lady: Well that's just stupid. Me: I'm sorry?
  • 10
Lady: I was just talking to [name]. Are you trying to play a trick on me? Me: No of course not ma'am. It's a very common name and both myself and the agent you were just speaking to share it. Lady: I think you're lying. How do I know. you aren't him?

New guy is here for the summer from a spanish speaking country. He has a very thick accent and a deep voice. While I do have a cold right now I very much do not have any accent and I've never been mistaken as a man on the phone before.

Me: I assure you I'm not a male. Lady: well that's just confusing. One of you should go by a different name. Me: I can definitely understand the confusion.

Translated: I can't but please shut up and tell me your problem. I won't drag this out anymore and just say that her issue was mainly that she was an idiot. Our property is huge and half of it is at the top of a mountain and the other half is at the bottom. There is a shuttle that goes from building to building to make things easier on guests. The woman wanted to make a report

that the bus driver hadn't put a step down for her when she was getting on the shuttle and she wanted a record of it in case her leg started to hurt her in the future. Most of our guests have mobility issues. The shuttles are all low to the ground already or they can kneel. By the lady's own report she didn't say anything to the bus driver about needing the extra step. She did not fall and she was not currently experiencing any pain. When I

offered to send security to her room to fill out a full report and assess if she needed to go to a doctor she refused because she didn't want to miss her tour.

eak125 5 yr. ago Funnily enough I change my name all the time. I have a nametag with my real name on it then I have a backup. This one I put some scotch tape over and write in whatever name I want. I was Nathan, then Johnathan, then Layton then Denton... now I'm Carl.

It makes it more fun when people put in complaints about employees that have never worked at the desk. Being by myself in the middle of the night, management can't stop me. Then there was the 2 weeks I was Shanelle...

my first name, but I also have the one with my first name still. When guests come to the desk angry I put on the middle name tag before I go out there.
