There's this thing that happens in the earliest levels of grade school where you're required to notify your teacher that you're going to be going to use the "facilities." Really, this is just for the sake of accountability and so that the adult responsible for your care knows where you are, that you'll soon be back, and that you haven't just wandered off to explore the world through the dreamy lens of your undeveloped prefrontal cortex. Even at that age, it's weird when the adults decide to make you ask if you can use the restroom rather than just letting them know that you're going to be leaving for a wee while.

With that in mind, it's bizarre to—as a grown-arse adult—have your boss monitoring your bathroom breaks just because they're concerned about the fact that they might happen to be paying you for the 5 minutes it took you to take care of business. Really, this all stems from the misconception that being paid hourly means that you need to be working with hyper-efficiency for the entire duration of your shift when that's really not the case… They're paying for a human to be present for that hour, and they have to take everything that comes with being human with that. Once they figure out how to get robots to do all of our jobs then they won't have to worry about bathroom breaks anymore—just maintenance and updates instead. You're paying me $7.25 an hour, Rodger, I'll use the bathroom when I need to, thanks.
This worker shared an account of the events that took place at their workplace when their boss asked them if they had a medical issue, owing to their “frequent” bathroom breaks. When they insisted that their bathroom duration and frequency were normal, their boss began demanding to know the number of times they had visited the bathroom that day. They've now turned to this popular online workplace community to ask other workers for their advice regarding what they should be doing.
By their own account, their bathroom attendance seems pretty standard… but who's keeping score anyway?
