It seems like these students were dealing with a larger issue---the more people who are living in one place, the more complicated the relationship dynamics become. Instead of asking one person for permission to have a guy over, you now have to ask three. That makes it easy to form cliques, too, and in the OP's case, two roommates who shared a bedroom would team up against them and another roommate.
