Son: Hey, I need to talk to you! Boss: Do you mean your dad? He's over there. Son: No, you. DADDY'S LOOKING FOR A NEW JOB! Everyone: Howling laughter

So my son has spilled the beans that I'm looking for a new job. I tried to play it down with my boss but I'm not too sure how that worked out. This happened end of business Friday, so we'll see what happens Monday. TL;DR: Brought my son to work and he told my boss I'm looking for a new job.

Embarrassed_Bee_7504 2 days ago Omg that's hilarious i hope they give you a raise to try and keep you Reply Share 259 Ghost17088 edited 2 days ago 2 days ago. If the only reason a company offers you a raise is because you're looking for or found another job, they aren't paying you what you're worth to them, they're paying the minimum it costs to keep you.

historyboeuf 2 days ago Maybe play it off like you are looking for a promotion or something within the company? Explain that you were doing some course or something at home and explained to your kid that it was because you were trying to get a promotion, but he didn't quite understand so you just simplified it to new job?

Yatty33 OP 2 days ago My plan was to fish for an offer with higher pay that I'm confident I could get, then use it to negotiate higher pay at my current employer. My kid had other ideas. I told my boss what I was up to and he wasn't surprised. I'll post an update Monday.

jeremymiles 2 days ago You should always be looking for a new job, and your boss should expect you to always be looking for a new job. Not looking hard, but you should know if there's something better out there. I try to do an interview (or at least apply) for a job once a year. You don't want the first interview you have done in 5 years to be one that really matters.

merdub 2 days ago OP, what you probably should have done was said that you've been researching other opportunities because you've been planning on approaching your boss for a raise and wanted to make sure you were informed on what other companies expected in terms of skills and experience, and what the benefits and pay are - so you can be sure that your request is both fair and reasonable.

Or, if the raise argument won't work... you can say that you are interested in taking some courses to upgrade your skills/knowledge so you've been looking at similar jobs to see what they are asking for, so you have an idea of what would be most valuable for someone in your job position.

"Oh yeah lol, I was doing this research and discussing the different job postings with my wife/partner/brother/cousin's roommates uncle... you know how kids are, they hear everything but don't always know the context."
  • 13
When I have my annual employee review/evaluation with my boss, I always bring in copies of 5 or 6 fairly recent job postings that have similar descriptions to my job and include a salary that's close to what I'm looking to get. I don't make it a secret that I love my job and there is value in that, but I'm also not shy to make it clear that if they can't compete in terms of salary, I will move on.

Anyways, these are two easy ways to play off a "looking at new jobs" situation that are plausible and also potentially also make it sound like you're trying to "help" the company, not bail on it.

Im_That_Asshole. 2 days ago That's easy enough to play off. Kid got bored so you told him you would find a more exciting job that you could take him to.

Invisableknight 2 days ago You can always play it off as you sympathizing with him for saying your job is boring and you joked maybe you needed a more fun one. Also he'll learn my dad had a friend in boring field when I was 6 and now I am looking to transition into it. 11 Reply Share ... yellsy 1 day ago Exactly kid thinks my new job is coloring and building Lego all day.

I always think employees who negotiate pay without a competing offer are just bitchy.

Sunshiny__Day 1 day ago I've never understood why people tell sensitive/personal things to their young children, or have conversations about those things in front of their children. Everybody knows that kids repeat things they hear.

OR Special-Brick 18 hr. ago . May I ask how you dealt with your son regarding this? 2 Reply Share ... Yatty33 OP 17 hr. ago Laughed and hugged him. No need to traumatize the boy over sharing I told him... even though he laughed hysterically after he told my boss.
