r/r/Tenant Posted by u/throwawayforunethica 7 hours ago A My Landlord Raised My Rent By $150 and Lost $9000 I have lived in this old cabin for over five years and have made many improvements to it, which the landlords are aware of. It is just me and my well behaved elderly dog that is inside 99% of the time.

They asked that I pay them in cash each month so they can pay their Mexican workers under the table. A few months ago, (from their second home, after bragging about spending $1000 eating out per month and getting free food delivered because they are

elderly)I was told they would be increasing my rent by $150 and also selling the property. He proudly braged he didn't need the money but "I was getting a deal, so he was increasing it. They are multimillionaires. I am a healthcare worker. I found another rental for less, nicer, and 20 minutes closer to work.

I gave notice and they just couldn't believe it. The place has been empty for five months. No one will rent it. They lost $9000 in rent because they wanted to be greedy.

brother_of_menelaus 5 hr. ago Luckily they didn't need the cash Reply Share ... 62 Chillpill411 5 hr. ago That's not how these kinds of mercenary folks think. They think they're smarter/better than regular folks and that's why they're rich. To lose a tenant and then have the place stay empty for months and months shows that they don't know everything, and that pokes a hole in their self- delusion of superiority. It isn't that they need the money. It's that they need validation that of their own

Exciting-Garden-8463 7 hr. ago Good for you haha, love to see it. Sounds like they got what was coming to them for being greedy ;. I think I speak for everyone when I say I'm sick & tired of being nickel & dimed by millionaires trying to squeeze every cent possible from me. I swear some of these landlords have entirely lost touch with reality

throwawayforunethica OP. 6 hr. ago That's the thing. They are patients where I work. They know how important healthcare workers are. They know exactly how much I make. To brag that they spend $1000 eating out per month, and that they don't need the money but I'm "getting a deal' so they are raising it.

whathehey2 6 hr. ago give them a 1099 for the rent you paid in 2023. that will freak them out especially when you send it to the irs Reply Share 52 throwawayforunethica OP 6 hr. ago That is a good idea. I've paid them almost $2000 in cash for over five years. I do have receipts though.

CannaFamCo 7 hr. ago Omg this happened to me in a short term rental. They broke my lease to attempt to increase rent by $800!! Nobody rented it, they decreased asking price for 2 months, finally someone rented it.

Anonymous63637375 4 hr. ago Did they even end up getting more than you were paying? Reply Share 2 CannaFamCo 3 hr. ago They lost about 6k for the yr for doing so. But, since it's an equestrian town they're always able to get a larger rent price in the winter for short term. However they had to accept 1,200 less than their original listing price.

waymoney 6 hr. ago Love that. My friends greedy landlord (after refusing to fix their broken fridge for 3 weeks) tried to raise their rent by about $600 a month. They tried to negotiate down to half of that but the landlord didn't bite so they noped out of their real fast. 5 months later, the apartment is still available for tent, but is listed for less than they were originally paying. Probably has lost close to 20k at this point in missed rent payments

Junior1544 6 hr. ago i love and hate seeing stuff like this... I love that you got a better deal and were prompted to do so because of a bad landlord... I hate the situation they put you in... Good for you!

throwawayforunethica OP 6 hr. ago It's tough because I love this place because I've done so much work to it and I would never have looked for a new place if they didn't raise the rent. Now it's just...empty. But at least they got that $150.

Ok_Neighborhood5832. 4 hr. ago Shocks me when people are renting and believe the landlord thinks they are "special" or "great tenants" so they are "giving them a deal" 98% of the time, no they aren't. And don't put equity even sweat equity into it thinking you will get something back other than enjoying it while you are there.

OCBrad85 5 hr. ago It sounds like you found a place that works better for you. Which is awesome. It also sounds like they are not nice people. But you were paying $2,000 /mo. for 5 years without any rental increases and then they bumped you by 7.5%? Based on the rental increases (or lack thereof) they don't seem greedy, like you say they are.
