You may think that you're going to the shelter to adopt a cat, but what is actually happening is you going to the shelter to present yourself to a bunch of potential little overlords that will change your life forever.     The cat distribution system truly works in mysterious ways. No matter who we talk to, no matter how they came across their cats, we always hear the same story - "it came into my life right right when I needed it the most." Every time.     We would like to believe this, we really would. To think that we spend our lives giving our cats everything that we can to make them as happy as possible for as long as possible and that their way of repaying us after all of that is making sure that we are not left alone when they go… is the best thought.

    Wiltshirewench @historynvintage : They definitely know. A few months before my sister's cat died a stray who used to hang around, kept its distance as if it knew.
