Posted by r/r/MaliciousCompliance u/rajalreadytaken 2 days ago Can't refund an item bought at 70% off? Fine, give me a cash refund at full price. SOC This happened a couple of years ago at Canadian Tire with one of their Mastercraft tools that often go on sale for huge discounts.

We were helping my in-laws clear out old belongings when they were moving, and I found an impact wrench that looked unused with a 2 year old (edit: probably much older) receipt attached. FIL said that there was always a problem with it, so he never used it and forgot to return it.

I decided to try to return it to Canadian Tire since they have long warranties on their products. The CSR looked at the receipt for $60 (on sale from $200) and said "You can't return this item with this receipt. Too much time has passed and the receipt is useless."

I tried explaining there were issues with it but she didn't believe me. I googled the issues right there, and it came up as a recall item for the exact reason I stated. I showed it to her and she begrudgingly agreed that I could return it as a recall.

She asked for the receipt back so she could refund me, and I said "No, too much time has passed and the receipt is useless." She glared at me and processed a cash refund for $225+ including taxes.

dmineau 2 days ago That's beautiful. That was quick thinking on your part as well. Reply Share 1.6k rajalreadytaken OP- 2 days ago To be fair, in real life it took a long time for her to verify the recall in her stack of paperwork. I was able to read the recall notice on my phone about a thousand times and it clearly said a receipt was not necessary

pummisher 2 days ago That's interesting. Usually if nothing is wrong with the item but you don't have a receipt, they will refund you but only the lowest price it ever was in their records. Reply Share.. 31 Raichu7 2 days ago Not for a recall, a recall is the manufacturer saying "we Tup so bad we are willing to give a full refund to anyone who brought our product if they return it". The shop gives the full refund, then the manufacturer pays the shop back.

blur911sc 2 days ago I once bought a Dewalt cordless circular saw at a yard sale, it was new, never used, guy had got it as a gift. I got it for $50, went to Canadian Tire, said it was a gift and returned it for store credit of $250 and bought the compound mitre saw that I wanted.

rilakkuma1 2 days ago That's also how we did it when I worked retail. But I could imagine there being different rules for a recalled item. 19 Reply Share ... rajalreadytaken OP- 2 days ago I think she said something along the lines of "I can't take this back, because I already saw your receipt and know how long ago you bought it." I cut it out of the post to keep it short.

halite001 2 days ago Worst case scenario, you speak to another person in the store / come back another day / go to another store. They won't win. 15 Reply Share HWY102 2 days ago They don't care about winning usually they care about management being total

lennybriscoe8220 2 days ago Not to be "that guy", but wouldn't the store be reimbursed by the manufacturer? 13 Reply Share cheesercorby 2 days ago for a recall return, absolutely. She was just salty at having to eat her own words.

Dependent_Price_1306 2 days ago I returned a cordless mixer that was faulty & just wanted an exchange, but they wouldn't because I didnt have the reciept. I showed them the credit card transaction on phone app & the accepted it. But instead of just exchanging ther refunded the original purchase att full price & rang up the new one at 40% off. Thanks Target for MCing yourself.

JustAnotherGeek12345. Reminds me of Sam's club. 1 day ago We had been given a temporary membership and purchased an item on sale. Wife decides to return the item and wouldn't you know, they can't accept the return at the sale price. Manager was called. Computer register does not allow non members to return a sale item but it will allow non members to return an item at full price. Pocket $5.

MBiddy88 1 day ago For Christmas one year my mom got me The Two Towers and Return of the King on dvd. I was psyched. But we had been renting out the extended editions from the library a ton and I had Fellowship extended already. So I took the two to Best Buy because we were sure that's where she got them but we couldn't find the receipt. She'd gotten them Black Friday and I kept telling the assistant that but without the receipt they gave us the full refund. I ended up getting the two extended e
