Don't get me wrong here; there are absolutely workers who habitually call out of work regularly, dragging the chain every which way in every fashion possible. Still, it's pretty obvious to everyone who these workers are… and when a worker has otherwise shown a track record of being consistent and reliable, it would be extremely petty to make an issue of them calling out for illness or for any other justifiable circumstance.
Unfortunately, many managers make a habit of doing so, trying to strong-arm their staff into coming in while sick, using any means necessary to ensure they have appropriate staffing levels—except actually employing enough people in the first place. Sure, they make a big deal about maintaining staffing levels on the day, but that's because they're running razor-thin staffing levels in the first place to save on labor.
These workers found themselves on the wrong side of their petty manager when they were forced to miss work with consecutive illnesses during the holidays at the end of last year that would have made it near impossible and extremely inappropriate to come to work. When they refused to come in, they found themselves “quiet fired” by being suddenly removed from the schedule in retribution.
