Back in the days before the cars or the internet, a couple might not know about that until a great-aunt showed up to spoil the wedding for everyone. Basically, asking if anyone objected to the marriage had an important purpose in the past. Today, it seems like the objectors are scorned exes, loud children, dads who can't resist making a dad joke, and sometimes even animals!
