Here's what I think about the concept of giving people loans - don't. It simply never ends well. Even if the person who is asking for the loan is a super close friend, or even a family member, involving money in these kinds of relationships can only cause them harm. So if you are in a position where somebody asks you for money, even if they are super polite and promise to pay you back, just say no.
The woman on this Reddit story obviously didn't say no, but she managed to get her money back anyway. 4 years ago, she gave her ex-husband a loan of $12,000 and up until recently, didn't get a penny back. But then a few days ago, he accidentally transferred her $18,000 dollars. Panicked, he of course asked for it back, claiming he needed this money to propose to his new girlfriend. OP (original poster) decided she would return the money, minus the loan she deserved.
This didn't bode well with the ex, or with other friends and family of OP, so make sure you scroll down to read the rest of the story. When you are done, click here for a story of a woman who refused to move in with her boyfriend after he bought himself a new car without telling her.
