Interviews are so tricky nowadays. There are so many tips and tricks out there about what you should and shouldn't do in an interview. A big tip we often hear is to not offer up too much personal information to the hiring team. I was trained to be on a hiring committee before, and while we were going through training, we were reminded again and again about different types of bias. A lot of these biases had to do with the questions we were and were not allowed to ask candidates. The company even went far enough to give us redacted resumes without names or any other information that wasn't relevant to the job. It's sad, but there are a lot of people who have inherent biases that they don't even realize, and when you're hiring for a job, the only thing that matters is how well the candidate is going to perform in that role. And, well, for this employer, whether or not they're into Star Trek. During an interview, a candidate said she could start immediately, except she needed a certain date off because she had a trip planned to Comic-Con.
