The concept of love languages, popularized by Gary Chapman, is a tool for deepening emotional understanding between you and your partner. Whether we vary in our expressions of love, it can't hurt to discuss with your partner and be aware of the ways they symbolize love. There are five agreed upon love languages: physical touch, acts of service, quality time, gift giving, and words of affirmation. It's common to straddle two of these love languages.
Making any effort to broaden the breadth of your perspective and understanding of your partner is the most important gift you can give to your relationship. When you put the work into a relationship, it shows. It's what separates a long-term or forever relationship with a short term one riddled with fights, misunderstandings, and pain. Long term relationships are predicated on the mutual respect and effort that two people put into each other, as well as themselves. You can't love someone else if you don't love yourself first.
