As a kid, I learned I needed to stymie my expectations for the animal community. When you're a wee little thing, you see so many anthropomorphized representations of animals in books and on TV that set your expectations of our non-human companions sky-high, only for them to disappoint you when you see the real thing. A prime example is when someone in my Girl Scout Troop told me about an elephant who could paint pictures. In my mind's eye, I imagined Van Goh-levels of genius artistry that deserved to be hung in the Louvre. When I saw what Ruby the Elephant had painted, I was disappointed, to say the least. I came to understand that it was incredible that she could hold a paintbrush at all, let alone make something that wasn't wholly abstract. If you have to lower your expectations for animals, feel free to raise them for these animal memes.
