"Yesterday I got the dreaded call... Take a demotion or leave."

Yesterday I got the dreaded call, take a demotion or leave I read the stories here and counted myself lucky but the dreaded call came yesterday. A bit of background: I've been a national manager for the past 5 years running various IT operation groups, basically fulfilling a director role without the official title or pay.

But yesterday, I got blindsided with the - we're eliminating your role - conversation, despite not even 3 weeks. ago discussing rumors I was hearing about me and my position through various channels, I was assured they were rumors and me and my position were safe.

Not only are they eliminating my position, my team will be split up to report to different business units, and they are offering me a demotion. If I don't accept the demotion, then they told me there's nothing else and I'll be exited. It still amazes me how much emphasis there is for Profit over People /rant

Iceroadtrucker2008 12 hr. ago Agreed. Just do what you have to do and no extra. Do 9-5 or whatever like that and when you leave shut off the work phone. And keep looking for a new job. GOOD LUCK!!!

disappointedvet 13 hr. ago I'd ask what they are offering in severance pay if you choose to be "exited". If nothing or too low to risk being jobless, take the demotion and work there till you can find another job. Quit without notice as soon as you find anything better. In the meantime, if anyone asks, tell them that all's good and that you're happy. It's fair play considering how they lied to you, and it's what you have to do to protect yourself from companies like this.

thedudeabidesOG 14 hr. ago Let them lay you off. Collect unemployment while you job search. Be sure to secure relevant information before you're locked out.

dragon34 11 hr. ago Remember to act your wage. If they ask you to continue performing work that would fall under your eliminated position, remind them that that position has been eliminated and those duties are being handled by so and so, and you will perform your duties. Don't quit. Just keep looking for a job.

SorryImBadWithNames 12 hr. ago Take the demotion, halth the job while looking for a new job, leave at the worst possible moment for the company.

darklogic85 13 hr. ago • I'd suggest taking the demotion, and immediately start applying for new jobs. It helps with job searching when you already have a job, despite how unusual that sounds.

UrBigBro 13 hr. ago • Google the maximum unemployment benefit for your state. Decide if you want to take the demotion and hit the job search hard while still employed or go on unemployment and job search

lowkeyfree 14 hr. ago Hopefully all the better overall. They've got to know what an insult that is; go somewhere that values you more, even if those places are more rare

Used-Ebb9492 · 11 hr. ago They have just given you previously to be a morale crushing boat anchor. Be useless, don't answer your phone, do barely acceptable work and job hunt at work. You owe them nothing.

ejrhonda79 12 hr. ago Does the demotion come with a pay decrease? If not it up and accept and play their game. Make them think you're ok with it (even though you're not). Then start searching elsewhere.

sarilysims 7 hr. ago DO. NOT. QUIT. Let them lay you off. Get the unemployment.

That Twin 5 hr. ago • Keep looking while demoted, pretend the demotion never happened on resumes/interviews. Get the actual title you should have elsewhere. Absolutely do not do any more work than what is required, let the new boss handle that
