I've said this, but I like to think of old paintings as ancient memes. We interpret them more solemnly because we tend to think of people from the past as more serious, but they had fun just like we do, and many of those paintings have a wink to the audience in the form of a funny smirk or gesture by one of the characters.

For those who are now teachers and are coming back to school from another point of view, this analogy could engage newer audiences with shorter attention spans. Or at least it can make you laugh and distract you from the horrors of a loud classroom.
