Typically, earning a bonus is a sign that you have assuredly gone above and beyond your employer's expectations for your role; it's more than likely you've contributed considerably to any increased revenue the company might have reported, and so, in a sense, you're just getting your cut. The thing is, this is cash in your pocket for you (after taxes, of course), and you'd probably never imagine that the company is going to come looking for it.
This worker reported that once they had handed in their notice to their job, their employer deducted the amount for a bonus they had received last summer from their final paycheck… without even notifying them that they were doing so. Depending on where they were employed, the situation is a bit too difficult to declare unlawful; some jurisdictions have laws allowing the deduction of bonuses from future pay if they were declared and signed for at the time. However, regardless of legalities, it is expected that they would at least notify or communicate their intentions first.
Frustrated, the worker shared their experience with this online workplace community, sparking discussion on the subject in the comments.
