AITA for asking my brother to stop doing magic tricks at every family event?

I (27F) have a younger brother (24M) who got really into magic
  • 03
first, it was kind of cool. he learned card tricks, sleight of hand stuff, even a few coin illusions. We were all supportive in part because he was stuck at home and needed a hobby.
  • 04
thing is, he still brings it everywhere to this day. Every dinner, birthday, holiday, cookout, he pulls out a deck of cards. etc.. It's like he needs to perform and he gets noticeably sulky if no one's paying attention.

The breaking point was at our dad's retirement dinner last weekend. It was just family and a few of his coworkers at
  • 07
a nice restaurant. my dad was making a short speech when my brother pulled out a deck of cards and tried to segway into a "quick trick" to "honor the man of the hour."
  • 08
No one asked for this. My dad awkwardly laughed and said, "maybe later, buddy" and tried to continue. But my brother still went around the table afterward doing his routines like it was expected.
  • 09
Later that night I pulled him aside and said (paraphrasing) "maybe just check the vibe before launching into a show.
  • 10
people came to celebrate dad, not for a magic show." He got defensive immediately and accused me of being jealous and "unsupportive" saying I "never want to see him succeed."
  • 11
Now my parents are involved, they said I should've just let him have his moment and that he's just "passionate." But it's not one moment, it's every single time. so AITA?
  • 12
SafeWord9999 Succeed? Like .. he thinks this is his career?

Nope. This was more about your brothers ego and getting attention when the focus was supposed to be on dad. Your dads celebration wasn't about launching his 'career' as a magician I have second hand embarrassment for him
  • 15
Sakshi Thu OP Haha he's never said outright that he wants to go pro tho, but he's mentioned getting gigs someday. right now it's just friends and family as the audience. And yeah, it wasn't about
  • 16
celebrating my dad, it was about getting attention during my dad's moment. I think that's what rubbed me the wrong way. It's not the magic or his talent, it was the timing
  • 17
Shadow4summer Yeah, right. This might be cute if he were 12 and not 24. His pathetic attempt to steal the spotlight should be embarrassing for all.
  • 18
andronicuspark I dig how letting him have his moment was only a thing when you said something. Your own dad was like, "Not now son a grown up is talking." NTA
  • 19
I'd let this go though, sounds like your brother is ruining it for himself and will continue to blunder around obliviously ignoring the glazed eyes and the vague mutterings about needing a restroom or leaving early.
  • 20
Upstairs_Internal295 I'm sorry but if you hadn't mentioned his age I would have thought you were talking about a ten year old.

b pickles99 Why are your parents against you if your dad was the one saying "not now buddy"?
  • 23
Seonaid MacSaicais Because some parents think only their voice counts. Like this one day, a group of kids cut through their yard and was pulling branches off one of their fruit
  • 24
trees. My parents grumbled about it inside, but after I stuck my head outside and asked the kids not to mess with other people's property like that, I got yelled at by my parents for telling the kids off!
  • 25
miflordelicata I have a brother who would bring his guitar to every party. Like dude man, we don't need to sit and watch you play.
  • 26
Kiefy-McReefer Typical magician behavior. Living in Hollywood for years we had a saying "friends never let friends date - magicians."
  • 27
They are all entitled pickmes, super annoying. Fix him before it's too late. NTA
