So what should we do when presented with these situations? Well, firstly, where possible, the best course of action is to remove yourself from the situation.
If removing yourself immediately isn't the issue, paper trails, and measured compliance are your greatest allies. Follow any process that won't land you in legal hot water so as not to draw attention to yourself and make sure that everything is documented. Network with those whom you trust, and put all of this together to chip away at what seems like an infallible authority.

The authority, in this case your employer, will never want to hear the quiet part out loud. In the instance of the example below, when an employer defaults on a payment, that's a huge red flag that the business is having cash flow issues and that you may come in one day to find the doors simply padlocked; the company liquidated, and your outstanding wages unpaid. Sure, it seems unlikely until it happens, and in a one-off instance, it might just have been a procedural or system error. But there will be other signs that the writing is on the wall that will coincide with this, that mark the beginning of the end.
Unfortunately, for this worker, simply by inquiring about their missing paycheck, they drew attention to themselves, which has put them in the spotlight of their employer's ire.
