This Is Your Reminder to Completely Format Your Computer and Delete EVERYTHING

Why I Do It

Over the course of a year, your computer quietly fills up with stuff you don’t need. Apps you installed once and forgot about. Random downloads you meant to delete but never did. Background processes you didn’t even know existed.

These things pile up. They bloat your hard drive. They eat into your system memory. And eventually, they slow everything down — especially on older systems with traditional hard drives (HDDs). Even modern SSD-based machines can get bogged down by too many background apps and unnecessary software.

Wiping it all and starting fresh is like moving into a brand-new apartment after years of living in the same space. Suddenly there’s room. Suddenly everything feels faster.

My Son’s Roblox Resurrection

Case in point: my son. He uses his computer for one thing — playing Roblox. He doesn’t install random programs or go on download binges. And yet, over the past few months, Roblox kept getting slower and slower. He lowered the graphics. Then he lowered them again. Eventually, the game was barely playable.

I formatted his PC. And overnight, it went from an old, cranky machine to a full-on gaming station again. Roblox ran perfectly — even with the graphics maxed out.

But Let’s Be Real: It’s Not Magic

Formatting your PC is a powerful fix, but it’s not a miracle cure. If your computer has a failing hard drive, bad RAM, overheating issues, or other hardware problems, a reset won’t solve that. In those cases, it’s like giving a sports car a fresh coat of paint when the engine’s already on fire.

Also, you don’t have to go nuclear every time. Windows offers a “reset but keep my files” option that can fix a lot of performance issues without wiping everything. I personally go for the full wipe because I like the clean slate, but that’s me.

And while I do this once a year, most people could probably stretch it to every 2–3 years unless things start feeling sluggish.

I Do It With My Phone Too

This isn’t just for computers. I do the same thing with my phone. Since I back up every photo and video to the cloud, I’m not afraid to reset my phone back to factory settings once a year.

If you’re on Android, it’s even easier. You can save a backup that remembers all your apps, their settings, and even where each icon sits on your home screen. So when you reset, it’s like your phone gets a brand-new body but keeps the same brain.

You Probably Don’t Need a New Computer

Look, I’m not a tech guy. I’m not a certified anything. I’m just a person who’s been using computers since the late 80s and has been doing this once a year for the last decade. And I can tell you: a lot of the time, you don’t need to buy a new computer. You just need to give your old one a clean slate.

So consider this your reminder. If your computer’s been slow lately, don’t just suffer through it or run out to drop a small fortune on a replacement. Back up your files, format it completely (or use the lighter reset option), and start fresh.

It’s a little scary the first time. But once you do it, you’ll wonder why you waited so long.
