"The time you step into the office determines the time you can leave" I work for a tiny software company. It's basically the two bosses, one -boss, me, and two devs/tech support. So they got me in to do marketing, SEO, and sales-ey stuff; but because we have a website and no resources allocated to fix

it (they refused to let me do so although I've been a web dev for years), it's really hard to generate any meaningful leads to meet the ridiculous KPIs they have set for me. Anyway, that's another story.

So for us three employees we have a so-called flexible work hours policy, where you can come in at between 9-10am and leave at 6-7pm, with an hour of lunch in between. I usually come in just a little over 9, and I don't usually spend a full hour on lunch because there's really nothing to do and it's really uncomfortable to hang out at the cafeterias because of all the smokers, so it's

barely half an hour when I'm back at my desk in the office. I usually leave at exactly or a little over 6. boss is probably non- My human; he seems to not require food for sustenance so he doesn't leave the office for lunch. Our office is tiny so he's aware of when and what time we come in and leave.

Last Monday was my girlfriend's birthday. We had dinner reservations for 7:30pm, which meant I had to leave the office at the latest 6pm to make it on time. I reached the office at 9:30am. No worries, I'll just get a quick 15- minute lunch and make up for the time, not that it really matters though, since I've been doing extra for months anyway. It

literally took me minutes to grab a bite at the cafeteria right downstairs and I'm back working at the office. Cool, I'll leave at 6 then.

I'm not a person, but neither do I show politeness when arguing with my superiors because their lack of logic and flexibility seriously annoys me. Now, before someone posts this on r/iamverysmart, I maintain my professionalism when I do this, since they are people I need to work with everyday.

6pm. I pack my things and was ready to leave, when boss (AB) calls me over and points at his watch. AB: Please mind your time. Me: You know I took less than 10 minutes for lunch right.
  • 10
AB: I do, but I don't care. You can only leave at 6:30pm, you know that. Me: So when can I take the extra time I saved up from lunch?
  • 11
AB: I don't care. That's your problem. The time you step into the office determines the time you can leave. Me: Alright.

Grabbed my chair, sat right in front of him with my legs on the table, and played with my phone with my headphones on for half an hour till 6:30pm. Pushed dinner reservation to 8, girlfriend completely understood. All good.

Here I am right after lunch with half an hour to spare, not doing extra beyond my work hours. Came in at 9am this morning so I'll be leaving not a second later than 6.

Gundhrams_folly You should use the extra time at lunch to look for a new employer.

tehfreek For extra malice, come in at 7 AM and wave goodbye to -boss every afternoon when you leave.

CreatrixAnima Take your lunch at five.

Thomisawesome That's exactly what you do. Good job. Instead of being a bit flexible and getting solid work out of you, they act like a tyrant and end up getting. exactly what they asked for. Until you find a new job, anyway.
