If you break something, you're responsible for its repair or replacement; that's really just common sense. Hopefully, you have insurance for such things that would cover you if someone needed you to repair or replace it. This responsibility understandably extends to your dependents, pets, and anything else you should have a responsibility and control over—whether or not you take that responsibility seriously.
Still, there are situations where the claimant might end up dealing with a claimant who is entirely unreasonable and taking advantage of the situation. Expecting things like a brand new $500 end table when you fell and broke the one they got for free on the side of the road or for you to bear the cost of renovating their entire house when your dog happened to chew the corner of their rug.
Yeah, it's best to have insurance to protect yourself from these people or an unfortunate situation where they have a legitimate high-value claim… For example, when your kids flush their $30,000 ring down the toilet for a laugh. Still, not having insurance on a $30,000 is insane and pretty irresponsible as well; if you have the money for such things, you certainly should have the money to insure it.
This online community was largely in the claimant's favor on this one, but ultimately, some were undecided because they couldn't wrap their head around the fact that the ring wasn't insured.
