Landlord Asks Tenant To Declaw Their Cat, Friend Asks Them To Cut Their Cat's Whiskers, Parents Tell Them Not To Neuter Him Because 'It's Against God's Will', But They Stand Strong Against Them

Over our time being both cat owners and writers at ICHC, we have to say that we have heard some crazy stories about people and their lack of understanding when it comes to cats. We have heard everything from people refusing to eat at their friend's house because they have a cat, to a man asking his roommate to stop kissing her cat, all the way to a boyfriend telling his girlfriend she's unhygienic because of the affection she shows her cat. Just- ridiculous stuff. And yet, this story still somehow surprised us. 

the landlord asking his tenant to declaw their cat is bad enough, but everything else - the friend asking them to cut the cat's whiskers, the parents telling them not to neuter their cat because "it's against god's will" - and all of it happening in one week… Ooshy and his owners have had a rough one. Thankfully, they kept their heads on their shoulders.

    Sometimes, we read stories like these, and we cannot believe that audacity that some landlords have. Seriously, we have heard of some silly requests from landlords, but this one is straight up cruel, and we hope, truly, that this landlord is simply unaware of what declawing means to a cat's life, and that when/if you explain, they will be decent and understanding.

    But just in case they are not understanding about it… then we support all the other comments under this thread. Move, lie, doesn't matter, just don't hurt this poor, adorable baby kitty that did absolutely nothing wrong.

    Do people not understand the cruelty? I'm not understanding. Not only would I never ask my vet to declaw him (isn't it illegal now?) I wouldn't even go to a vet that offers declawing.

    Then my friend stayed with me for a few days, and she's never been within 20 feet of a furry animal. So she was terrified of my little Ooshy. Then she kept suggesting I cut his whiskers because they're "too long".

    Then my family members told me not to neuter him because it goes against Gods will and mutilates His creation.

    Ooshy has had an interesting week. We're not declawing, his whiskers are perfect, and neutering is scheduled for September

    dairy-intolerant · 10 days ago My mom said my cat's whiskers are too long and asked if we should cut them, but she'd also never grown up around cats or been near them before I got him. Same with declawing. Lots of people just don't know anything about cats. I explained to her why neither should ever be done to a cat and she never brought it up again.

    It's not just cats either. Dogs are also often mutilated for no good reason (cropping ears and tails). It's just misinformation and lack of education 1.0k Reply Share

    kamrydraws OP. 10 days ago The lease doesn't say anything about declawing or pet deposits. It just says I'm responsible for any damage he does to the property. According to the superintendent's inspection last month, there is 0 damage to the apt and we passed with flying colors. And the superintendent loved Ooshy so I can't imagine him reporting anything to the landlord

    He's also already an ESA prescribed by a Dr, so she can't ask me to mutilate him in the first place. And I called the vet anyway to talk about this, and she offered to write a letter to the landlord explaining why they refuse to do this procedure. After several emails and phone calls the issue hasn't been brought up again, so I'm hoping this matter is open and closed 161 Reply Share

    kamrydraws OP 10 days ago Yeah I love my vet. It became the talk of the clinic because the vet techs were shocked at the request. The vet techs even offered to call the landlord to hash it out personally. I'm not worried about it anymore lol
