TL:DR In Spring, boss agreed to give me a large bonus in late summer rather than giving a salary increase. Now is using delay tactics to not pay out.

This Spring I had a discussion with my boss and our office manager present about getting a raise. I had been working at the office for over 2 years and never had an official review or bump in salary but I have excelled in my position, and it was

summer (end of July/August) and was told "Just tell the office manager when it's time and she'll write the check." We also recently received a huge payout from another case that closed. I have a strong feeling the boss is just trying to me over and when the case I'm working on closes, he'll have another excuse for delay. And now I'm wondering if I should just look for a new job with a higher salary.

It doesn't make him look good that he'd try to sell you on accepting less pay over time, and it definitely doesn't pass the sniff test with him trying to tell you what's good. for you and your finances. On that premise alone I would start the job hunt.

Green-Inkling 16 hr. ago Bosses are like fey. They'll say and do anything long as it favors them above you. You may have seem like to get a good bonus but the boss will do all they can to prevent you from having it. And with no paper trail you can't push back.

shibbyman342 - 3 hr. ago Getting a lump sum isn't better. 1. you'll pay more in taxes. 2. you'll get that money upfront, but you'll be making your same salary after this year, and there's zero guarantee you'll get another bonus. It would be more difficult for them to lower your salary than to not give you a big bonus.

Definitely get everything in writing, but I would definitely prefer a traditional raise unless you need emergency cash now.
