Welcome back, Hunters! Hunter x Hunter has two manga adaptations. For some, that just means double (or triple!) the content and opportunity to enjoy the world created by renowned mangaka Yoshihiro Togashi. Others have very strong opinions about which adaption is better, and enjoy a nice, friendly, or heated discussion comparing the two. Truth is, both series have their own set of flaws and shining attributes. The 1999 anime, animated by Nippon Animation Studio, is much darker and atmospheric. It has more filler and generally moves a lot slower. Some consider the animation to be clunkier while others are drawn by the the charms of 90s animation. The 2011 adaptation, animated by Madhouse, has much more modern and fluid animation. It is more faithful to the manga as it doesn't diverge with filler. The colors are much brighter and the series has a generally more cheerful vibe, usually only hinting at the darker undertones of the series - at least until the Chimera Ant arc where the darkness goes all out. Whichever you hold closer to your heart, enjoy these side-by-side images of scenes and characters from the beloved series!
