'He was offended and hasn't talked to me since': Girlfriend Says She Would Save Her Cat Over Her Boyfriend in a Fire, He Takes It Badly

When it comes to cats and relationships… we've noticed lately that the combination can make quite a few problems arise. You would think that a furry little feline would be a great addition to a relationship, but apparently not always. Which is ridiculous. Because cats are purrfect, and anyone who thinks otherwise doesn't know what they are talking about. But alas, some people don't quite get it, and it leads to some hilarious (and mildly insane) scenarios. 

We have read all kinds of stories about these kinds of conflicts. Everything from - boyfriends not being able to handle being 'second' to the cat because of their fragile egos, to boyfriends asking their girlfriends to choose between them and the cat, all the way to one boyfriend call his girlfriend unhygienic because of the cat that she sometimes kisses on the forehead. Today's story though… it might be the most petty of them all.

    These kinds of questions… it's like asking for trouble. We all know what is the answer that people want to get when they ask this, but they're hard questions for a reason. But it's a trick question, and both answers would be bad in different ways. Don't ask, and you won't have to be disappointed.

    And listen, although we do think that they boyfriend's reaction was a little exaggerated, and he should not have gotten this offended over a silly question, we also honestly think that this answer could have been given in a slightly better, more empathetic way.

    repeated that if there was a fire I would save the cat and not him, and then explained that he could save himself while the cat could not understand. He was offended, went to sleep and hasn't talked to me since.

    For context my bf has been jealous of the cat since I got him. I have wanted a cat since I was a child so I was very excited when I got him and couldn't stop talking about him. He has made comments about it a few times but I always told him that there is no reason to be jealous,

    I love my cat like you love a pet and my bf like you love a partner and it's not the same love. I don't love my cat like a human and even less like a lover but he doesn't understand that. I find it silly to be jealous of an animal.

    I don't think what I said is irrational but he seems very hurt so maybe it was wrong Maybe i should apologize because we have a great relationship and I don't want this to cause problems.

    Fragrant_Spray · 5 days ago In reality, if there's a fire, your cat will understand they need to get out before you figure it out. This isn't really about the practicality of it, though. From your standpoint, you see it as "the cat needs my help and you don't".

    From his standpoint, if he does need your help (like maybe he's unconscious), you'd still pick the cat. You could have said a lot of things here, but you said the thing intended to get a reaction out of him, and you got it. Congrats. YTA. 93 Reply Share
