Our favorite Gothic Avenger, Eric Draven, is back in theaters. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't exceptionally disappointed in the new "reimagining" that was released last month.
I think we can all agree that there is only one Eric Draven, and that is the late, talented Brandon Lee. The character of Eric encompasses what it is to feel such profound love and hate at the same time as a result of unimaginable loss. Lee takes on a new form in the film and dully embraces the campy nature of the ideas at play. From a synopsis, you would think this is a silly movie that does not take itself seriously at all. But if you take the time to watch, and then, maybe rewatch, you'll see that Lee does a great job blending trauma-induced craze and profound depth in a way that is easy to digest as the viewer.
The same, in my opinion, cannot be said for the new film. If you haven't seen it yet, I think it's worth the watch simply because you can then be involved in the discourse surrounding it. Many believe they should've taken a different direction, going so far as to have Skarsgård ditch the Draven persona completely and take on a new character. But you've heard enough of my spiel, I'll let these The Crow memes speak for themselves. Nothing like a mixture of goth vibes and a revenge tale to get you going today!
