Woman Decides to Put Herself First After Years of Being Treated Like Her Sister's ‘Second Mother’ By Her Parents: ‘I snapped’

Expecting a child is immensely exciting and equally nerve-wracking. The work that goes into learning exactly what to do and not do is laborious. Maybe, you're an older sister. What comes with being the elder sibling is nurturing your younger siblings when needed. However, it is not your job to take on a full-fledged parental role (unless your circumstances suggest otherwise.) If your parents suggest that you have to sit back and take it when it comes to what's expected of you after years of being treated like a "second mother" rather than a daughter, you have every right to abandon ship. As an expectant mother, you have your own child to worry about.

The original poster (OP) of this story is expressing grief about an encounter she had with her parents and sister. The OP is three months pregnant and explains that she has a mixed family because her biological parents got divorced and both had separate children with other partners. It seems she takes on a motherly role when she's around her siblings, but she claims her parents only talk to her when they want something. There was a family gathering one night and the OP ended up watching all of the children in the family, "like usual." She sits down with a dessert and her younger sister asks for some. After eating most of it, the OP is upset. The dessert, to her, seems to symbolize how she always has to consider her siblings before her, and her father makes an unhelpful comment that sets her off. She responds that she was never truly treated like a daughter, but rather a nanny.
