That's such a hilarious reason to assume someone was gay, but my theory is that there is something else that contributed to her assumption the mom isn't telling him. This justification sounds like something she just pulled out of a hat because she was getting called out. It is probably a big part of her assumption, but it cannot be the only thing; otherwise, she would've had reasonable doubts and probably wouldn't have told her friends about it.

While his verbiage could be better, I don't blame him for getting upset about this unfounded speculation. Straight people who are assumed to be gay can also be the victims of homophobia, and those rumors are not quickly clarified, and clarifications are frequently not believed when the rumor is so widespread. I feel like this guy might feel a little differently if his crush's mom wasn't one of the people who was told he was gay.
