It's not like a 4-year-old will really be able to tell that they're getting less nice gifts than her half-siblings. His getting angry about the kinds of presents she's getting is the only way she could tell that.

I agree with this comment. It's a lot more difficult to find childcare when a kid is under 5, especially when you're working the odd hours that food service and retail bring. Those aren't jobs you can bring your 4-year-old along to. I'm not making excuses for him, but most people who work odd jobs to get by have at least one family member to help them out.
