At the end of the day, the question isn't, “Is the other person being extravagant?” or “Is this situation unusual?” The question is, “Am I the bad guy?” and I think that in this situation, it's totally uncool for a grown adult to criticize an extremely generous gift that her teenager got in front of the person who got it for him. There are 5-year-olds who know that that is uncouth, and she should know better.

It can feel wild to accept a gift that is both extremely expensive and material. Accepting a check made out to you for $10,000 is one of the easiest things you can do, but when you know that someone actually decided to exchange $10,000 cash for a non-practical material object for you and you alone, it can really show you how different your spending habits and lifestyles are. I cannot imagine anyone spending thousands of dollars on an item of clothing for me, especially without a gift receipt or without asking what I like first. But some people have enough money to brazenly spend $2500 on a gift for a random family member without really caring if they actually will like and use it or not. You're lucky if you ever receive such a generous gift from someone you're not married to, but some people don't see it that way.
