I've recently started the apartment hunt in New York City. To call it some twisted housing market version of The Hunger Games would be an understatement.
In a way, I've been spoiled. Growing up in one of the most popular neighborhoods in NYC has its perks, but trying to move out of your childhood home is not one of them. First-world problems, I know.
You can see an apartment listing on Craigslist or StreetEasy 15 minutes after it's been posted and the broker will email you saying someone's already signed. It's utter mayhem, but that's life in a place with a large population. If you've ever tried snagging a nice apartment within your budget in any city, you'll understand the struggle. One can only hope that rural living becomes the next big thing so the market melts like good ol' butter!
