"Boss is mad I didn’t volunteer to stay longer at work."

"Boss wanted to switch me to a position that pays lower and make me stay two extra hours" 101

I was supposed to be off but i filled in for someone. Boss apparently didn't approve the shift change and wanted to switch me to a position that pays lower and make me stay two extra hours.
  • 03
I straight up said (respectfully) that I didn't want to. I only accepted the shift because I 1) make more hourly and 2) could get off in time because I had something to do. Boss gets an attitude and says "what do you have to do?" "go to the store."
  • 04
"What store?" Like does it matter? I said I need to leave. She ends up saying she'll "come fill in for me" so I can leave on time.

She gets there early and sends me home.

I guess she thought I was gonna kiss a and be a yes man and stay. My mom says I'm wrong and should've stayed because "that's your boss" but I don't give af . I was supposed to be off today, you're going to agree with my terms or I'm leaving. I don't need this job. Call one of your managers to come work because I don't get paid enough for this.

Gaijin Rider Whatever happened to bosses asking nicely for you to stick around for an extra hour or two. Ten years ago your boss would nicely ask you for a favor "hey mate, so and so happened and we have no one else, can you cover for us for an hour or two, it'll really help out".
  • 10
If you said no, your boss would be chill "yeah worries".
  • 11
Nowadays these new bosses are so lazy and entitled. I know it s ks to go in to work for two hours as a manager on your day off but it's literally their job, they have to learn to deal with it.
  • 12
Nowadays when someone demands that I do extra overtime I tell them to shove it. "Hey I need you to stay late today." Nah bossman, I don't want to, see ya.

No-Currency6222 OP yess my problem is that i wasn't asked i was demanded. she tried to send a coworker to tell me i HAD to switch like no i need to hear that from a manager. and even then I don't want to stay late on my off day over a mistake your management made in the schedule. Figure it out yourselves, I make minimum wage here...

No-Currency6222 OP Update: manager just texted the work group chat and said get approval before switching because "someone almost got fired last night." i was planning to quit soon anyway but if they want to retaliate because i left.. i'll just clock out and never show up again instead of leaving a two weeks notice.

JustSomeOldFucker It's become harder to find but decent bosses are out there. My personal experience has been the opposite of yours: years ago, supervisors would tell me they needed me to stay. Now, they ask if I can or want to. My GM asked me to run to another job site because an hour prior a hospital board decided to recommission an OR. Dude asked me nicely and thanked me when I agreed to it.

singerbeerguy It's always been this way. Nothing "nowadays" about it. There have always been some bosses who are good and understanding and others who are complete

Vast_Negotiation_982 This is her job as a boss and if she hasn't figured that out yet, she will soon. Ignore it and continue being nice like you did nothing wrong, because you did nothing wrong.

zoodee89 My employer over committed on a huge project and we are going to be 2 weeks late. Asking everyone to stay extra and help out. He'll buy pizza. I'm salary and don't accept pizza as my compensation. Pound sand.

mmcksmith The only mistake you made was explaining. Next time a boss demands to know what's more important, reply "I have other commitments." It doesn't matter if your commitment is to sit in your car with drive-through food and stare out the window. It's still a commitment you made to yourself, just now, because it's YOUR TIME.

Enjanced Your mom is wrong, mate. And you got everything right. If you dont NEED this job. Or If you dont need THIS job. That means they have no leverage on you and they can kick rocks. It a power relationship and the boss found she had none with you. Good for you!

ForeverSeekingShade "Someone almost got fired last night" lol bet. Ghost them.

meow_haus Good for you for not getting exploited. Your have a life outside work and they need to respect that,

hotwifefun I've lost track of the number of times I've been asked to come in early, stay late, or cover another shift.
  • 27
My response is always the same, "sure, as long as I can leave 2 hours early on Friday" or.. "I'm good, as long as I can clock in 2 hours early on Monday to make some OT" No? Oh I see, favors only go one way here huh?
