College student abandons entitled friend's family after they make her their personal vacation worker for 9 people: '[The parents] did a double-take seeing me on the beach'

This rich family thought they had the perfect life-hack for their swanky vacation. 

For all of the money and resources they have, a lot of wealthy people are actually super cheap. They'll spend hundreds of thousands on a brand new car, but then refuse to tip the valet. They'll drop a few thousand bucks on some new shoes, then go to a coffee shop next door and freak out because their latte costs 50 cents more than it used to. A lot of rich people defend this kind of behavior by saying that they try to be wise with their money… but it rings hollow when they waste money constantly. 

Just take this family, for example. They were flying out on their vacation in first-class seats, which usually cost several thousand dollars at minimum. They should've spent that money on a personal chef, instead. The mom of the family just had hand surgery, which is an important reason to avoid cooking. If there was ever the perfect opportunity to treat themselves to luxurious meals 3 times a day for their whole vacation, that's a fantastic reason!

But no. Instead, this family invited along their college-age daughter and her roommate. The women were psyched for the vacation at first. But the family had them then make all the meals, cooking for 9 people (!) when these women just don't have the skills or resources to do that. That sounds like it could take hours every day! The parents could've saved themselves a lot of hassle, but instead, the college-roommate turned vacation buddy turned chef fled the scene.

    I am in college and my roommate from last year, Meg, who's family is really rich, said she could bring a friend on vacation. It was kinda awkward, I was her third choice but her family vetoed the first two because they didn't want her bringing a boy or this other female friend of hers they disliked. The first night they went to a grocery, it turns out they wanted to cook at the resort kitchen for the whole trip And by "they wanted to cook" it actually turned out that they wanted me and Meg to cook. I wasn't warned about this but it turns out Meg's family is sooo "traditional" that they see cooking as a women's job. And

    her mom had just had hand surgery. So it was me and Meg cooking every meal for six men and her mom. And I can't cook well. I know a couple staple meals to feed myself but since I rarely eat meat I don't know how to cook it. I'm also ok at cooking for 1 or 2 but have no practice cooking for a group of 9

    I screwed it up, undercooked chicken, and overcooked some steak and her dad was angry with me. I got short with him and told him that if he knew how to do better he could pitch in instead of standing around criticizing. But he got furious and said he was on his vacation. I said that I was trying to have a vacation too, or did they invite me to be an unpaid domestic servant?

    His dad snapped at me and told me to get out of their suite and go home. Didn't say sh about how he expected me to do that. I left and called the airline with my ticket, and asked them if they could do anything to prevent anyone else from modifying or cancelling my ticket. They let me set a passcode, and no changes could be made to the flight without it.

    Then I went to the resort desk to ask about rooms, saying I was stranded unexpectedly. They actually did have some affordable rooms available because of a weekday discount. So I got housing and still had money left over for touristy stuff.

    I went sightseeing and relaxed on the beach for three days, until Meg's parents ran into me. They were taking a sunset walk and did a double take seeing me on the beach. They said they thought I was going home, and I said I decided to stay. They were angry because they saw me staying and using the return flight as having deceived them into thinking I couldn't afford a vacation, and using them for flights when I could actually afford things.

    Commenters were totally aghast at the parent's decision

    Anit... NTA - that is literally insane. Who takes someone to another city/state/country and then just abandons them there? I realize you are a young adult, and obviously more than capable of handling yourself, but if you were my child that family would be getting a piece of my mind.

    ncslazar7 NTA. They took you to a foreign country under false. pretenses. Luckily you had some money, because if you were broke and they canceled your ticket, you'd be completely vulnerable and reliant on strangers charity.

    [deleted] Nta Meg is not your friend, she definitely knew the situation she was putting you in and didn't think to give you a rundown before asking you to join. You had every right to stay and enjoy your vacation.

    I'm not so sure I agree, though. The family made her cook, too! If she was a good friend, she never would've made her roommate join in. But it's not clear if she knew going into the vacation what was expected of her and her friend.
