Boss bans jeans on Fridays and enforces business attire, entire team maliciously complies: 'All 15 of us [wore] hideous outfits, but all meeting the business attire dress code'

Don't we all just love it when new bosses decide that the best way to flex their sense of authority is to enforce nonsensical rules that have absolutely nothing to do with the work that gets done every day? Unfortunately, far too many employees have to undergo various iterations of this phenomenon when new team leaders take on their responsibilities.

  • Here, we have a new boss who decided to become everyone's enemy by forcing her entire department to wear business attire on Fridays, the one day of the week that every other department was allowed to wear jeans. Furthermore, there were no client interactions on Fridays, so this was purely about optics and nothing else. It wasn't about the personal preferences of the company at large, especially since none of the other departments were required to undergo this change; rather, it was purely the preference of the new boss.

However, he decided to make absolutely nothing match, and soon, the rest of his team followed his lead…

    Here is where we cue the malicious compliance. The next Friday, I went to my closet and found the most mismatched outfit I could put together, sticking completely to business attire. We are talking pastel floral print shirt with pants with bold colored stripes. I put it on and proudly walked into the office.
