'I lost it': Person kicks their friend out of the house because of the way the friend treated their cat and then laughed about it, now wonders if they overreacted

Cats are not always the best around strangers. They like their space, they like their people, and they don't like unknown people invading their spaces. We get that. Of course, it doesn't stop us from trying to befriend every cat that our friends have. We're gentle with them, we take things slow with them, and if our friend's cats deem us worthy enough to come and sit with us, we take that for the honor that it is. Cats are affectionate, sure, but not with everyone. So, when a cat does show you affection, even in a small way, you have to understand how amazing that is. 

The friends in this story did not get it. Instead of understanding that this cat coming up to them was a compliment, being still and letting the cat enjoy their company, they did just about the worst thing that they could have - they mistreated the cat, tossing it off the couch and scaring it. And the owner, the owner couldn't take it and lost it.

    I have a cat who is my baby. She's super friendly but a little skittish, and I always remind guests to be gentle with her. A friend of mine came over the other night, and while we were hanging out, my cat jumped onto the couch near them.

    Out of nowhere, my friend shoved her off the couch. Not a little nudge an actual shove that made her hit the floor hard. My cat ran and hid under my bed, and I lost it. I asked them what the h I that was, and they just laughed and said, "Relax, it's just a cat."

    I told them to get out immediately. They acted like I was overreacting, saying they didn't mean to hurt her and that it wasn't a big deal. But my cat was terrified, and I don't care if it was intentional or not- that kind of reaction to an innocent animal is not okay with me.

    Now they're telling our mutual friends that I threw them out over “nothing,” but the response hasn't been what they expected. Most people are on my side, saying that was way out of line, and a couple even admitted they never liked how this friend treated animals. Still, a few think I was too harsh and should have just given a warning instead of kicking them out immediately. AITAH?

  • Good people don't do things like this. Good people don't react like this to an animal - any animal - merely sitting down next to them. We don't know if we would have gone as far as to kick them out, but we might have for something like this. You do not mistreat our cats in front of our faces.

  • The commenters are right. If this is the way that they treat your cat in front of your face, we don't know how they would treat said cat when you're not there. If you don't want to cut this friend out completely, one thing that we would make sure of is that they are not in contact with your cat again.

    medsoop21 Nah, NTA. Your friend straight-up yeeted your cat and then laughed about it?? That's psycho behavior. Anyone who disrespects animals like that doesn't deserve to be in your home. Also, the fact that others already had bad vibes about how they treat animals says a lot. They're just mad they got called out. Good Riddance...
