'I've learned my lesson': Heroic family dog saves her hoomans' lives by barking nonstop at "nothing", until they started to smell gas

Dogs know much more than we give them credit for. We've always said that our doggos were smart, but we're not even sure if we fully realize how truly intelligent they are. We don't speak the same language, after all. In fact, they know more of our language than we do of theirs! We firmly believe that our own ego and intelligence get in our own ways sometimes. Like, we should listen to our doggos more! Fur example, when our doggo doesn't trust someone, we don't trust them either. Dogs have a sixth sense about these kinds of things.

We often try to shush our dogs from barking. It's annoying. Sometimes they bark for "no reason," but usually it's just no reason to us! When 'Molly', the heroic family doggo in this post, kept barking at her hoomans' oven, they ignored it or tried to distract her. They wrote it off as just annoying dog behavior.   • Our dog barks whenever she hears someone in the hallway of our apartment building. It's totally unnecessary, but we get why she does it. She's trying to protect us! Unfortunately, we don't need protecting, but we appreciate the sentiment.

    A few weeks ago, I noticed that the area near my oven smelled like gas and the oven had been off for weeks. I open the oven and was overwhelmed by the smell. The gas company sent someone over and they confirmed it was an internal leak

    that they suspected had been getting progressively worse for some time. We turned the gas (for the oven only) off that day and it hasn't been on since. Our dog doesn't whine at the oven at all anymore.

    One of my sister's dogs taught me that lesson years ago. It was only a water leak, thank god, because by the time they figured out what was going on they had to rip the floors out of half the house to fix the damage, and they never got the mold under control.

  • Molly deserves at least three steak dinners, if you ask us. She was a very good girl and didn't give up. Thanks to her, their house, themselves, and their other pets are still alive. She's a true hero!
