With all this anxiety swirling around, is it any wonder that one employee is spiraling over a seemingly innocent lunch invitation from his boss?  

Let's set the scene: the boss is traveling 300 kilometers just for lunch, and then heading right back, no small talk, no sightseeing—just a single meal with one terrified employee wondering which bombshell will be dropped with the appetizer. Is it a promotion? A demotion? Is the couch spider stealing his job? These thoughts are understandable when you're invited to the managerial version of a surprise party—except instead of balloons, there's an ominous "we need to talk" vibe hanging in the air.

  • I work for a big engineering firm. My boss is basically making a big trip to my office, saying that he wants to see my city's office of the same company. He then wants to have lunch with me, and then he's going back to his own city.

  • I've received a good performance review (from my supervisor), although they did want to give me new responsabilities that I could not take for family reasons (too much travelling) and that I respectfully declined. My supervisor seemed OK with that.

  • That being said, do bosses often invite employees for lunch to give bad news, ultimatums or to fire them? Am I reading too much into this? It is stressing me out a bit.

  • MidgetLoving Maxx I mean this respectfully, but unless something weird is going on, or you left something out, your position doesnt sound important enough for someone to travel 6 hours round trip to fire over lunch. Theyd just teams call you friday afternoon and be done with it.
