‘Anything that keeps you there’: Employees discuss the nonsensical so-called benefits that were disguised as company ‘perks’

In 2021, it was the tech start-ups and big tech companies who walked circles around other companies in terms of employee benefits. Fruit bars every day, a Starbucks stipend, in-office nannies to take care of the little ones while you sold your soul away to the corporate overlords. These company benefits are benefits—until they're not. Speaking from experience, a lot of "perks" companies offer, as some commenters will mention in this Reddit thread, are designed to keep you there and allow companies to take advantage of your hard work. No, it's not normal to have a "nap pod" in the workplace. I don't want an arcade down the hall; I want to be able to leave at 5 PM sharp and hit up the arcade near my house.

You'll find the common “unlimited PTO” complaints and the pizza parties for meeting Q1 goals everywhere you look, but some of these company perks walk circles around some of the most nonsensical things you've ever heard. These “perks” convince you that your job is perfect on paper, but in reality, your company just wants to pull fast ones on you and use these “benefits” to prove they aren't the worst.
