Boss promotes employee to ‘leadership role’ but doesn't include a raise or added benefits, just more responsibilities: ‘Calling it a “promotion” felt dishonest’

  • "The room got awkward, and my boss just smirked and said, 'You should be grateful for the opportunity.""
  • "AIO this, or did my boss just completely humiliate me with my ‘promotion’?"

I thought I was finally getting recognized at work, but now I just feel like an absolute idiot. A few weeks ago, my boss pulled me into a meeting and hyped me up, saying I was doing amazing
  • work and they wanted to "reward" me. They offered me a new title and a "leadership role," which sounded exciting until I realized:
  • 1. No raise. Not even a cent. 2. No added benefits. 3. A fancy new title but I'm still doing the exact same job with more responsibilities.
  • The worst part? They announced it in a company-wide email like it was some huge promotion. People started congratulating
  • me, and I had to awkwardly smile and thank them while knowing I literally got nothing out of it except a meaningless title and more responsibilities.

  • I asked my boss about a salary adjustment, and they smiled and said, "This is a stepping stone for you! If you work hard, there could be financial incentives NEXT YEAR*
  • That's when I kind of "snapped". I told him that I found it insulting to be given more work without fair pay and that calling it a
  • "promotion" felt dishonest. The room got awkward, and my boss just smirked and said, "You should be grateful for the opportunity."
  • Now I'm wondering, did I overreact? Should I have just played along and kept my mouth shut? Or was I right to call him out?
  • Actual-Discussion-89 lol I've been here. Your boss has done exactly what you suspect they have done. In my situation, when I pushed back & demanded to give the extra responsibilities back, they insisted that I take a pay cut, despite the fact that I didn't get a pay rise to take them on NOR.
  • One-Put-3709 I'd leave. Or start shopping for another job.
  • bf-es They like to make people managers so suddenly they don't have to pay you OT
  • BenneB23 Grateful for what opportunity, the opportunity to work more, with more responsibilities for the same pay? Good on you for standing your ground. Time to leave. There are more opportunities elsewhere. Tell them exactly why you're leaving.
  • Cutterbuck We have all been there, (those of us over 40 at least). Email back explaining you are excite about the prospect an ask what metrics you will be expected to hit to achieve the pay rise.
  • You now have your answer in writing. Either you decide to push for those targets or you decide you to take the new title and look for a new job that pays a salary that befits the title. a vague spoken promise of a new role, well that never delivers.
  • Muroid Time to take the fancy new title and use it to shop around for a job that will actually pay you for holding it.
  • Alexis2337 Not overreacting. You did what most of us would want to do but are afraid to do. You spoke your mind lol. Im the exact same way.
  • Its simple, if your not feeling valued, respected and just another of the companys tool/robot that will comply to anything. Then you have every right to put the foot down and say "No, this stops here." If you and Boss cant find any middle ground on your promotion then you know what you should do... cheers.
  • Agency-Aggressive They expect you to just nod and go with it because that is the way everyone is now, up to you if you actually want to grow a set
